so, you're passive? How could you ever take credit for your success if that's just the hand you were dealt?

I think that's a large part of the attitude needed. You have to live your life and make sure you have few regrets of what you did when you get older. Learn to forgive yourself and others. Enjoy everything you can as you go through life. There are many good things in life if you stop long enough to see them. Treat each person you meet in life the way you would want to be treated - share yourself as well and gracefully accept what is given to you.

Avoid dwelling on the negative things - acknowledge them, do what you can to rectify the wrongs you see. Do your best to make this a better world, but don't let it make you so depressed about the bad that you can't see the good and continue living.

Life is a series of ups and downs. Nobody has a perfect life, and the "its just a ride!" attitude really helps you through the downs.

"Sit back and enjoy the ride!"

This "Just A Ride" attitude , in life amounts to total surrender of oneself , in the hands of another. ! Just think for yourself. You decide to go for a ride. Do you simply take any ride? Or..... you think , pause, take decision about safety, security, cost your capacity, time frame... many many such things. In very short time you scan through these questions internally and make a CHOICE. Then you can sit back and relax in that chosen ride.

This is precisely what we all do. YOU take all the decisions with your own free will and then , once taken , you do what you can to go along with that decision. This where you say " Life. it is just a ride!" This , then , is a great attitude to life. In one of the greatest eastern Philosophy this has been said so well. " You have only the right to do things /actions. The outcome of your actions are not in your hands. Hence leave the outcome and donot worry about it."

That would be a great idea ... life would be a great fun if it were like this, a ride, that would never lose the elements of wondrous surprises along its twists and turns, ups and downs. But unfortunately, even the most amusing rides known to man cease to be amusing at some stage or the other, if this is all that is there for one to enjoy. How long for example one could enjoy going round and round on a merry-go-round? Besides, the sense of being carried along, and not being actively involved in whatever is going on this ‘ride’ would eventually make us feel helpless and least significant, however carefree and light-hearted. The fact is we like to take responsibilities, or we like to feel responsible in our lives. Most of the time we like our life to be serious, genuine, awesome or tidal rather than merely a jolly good fun on a helter-skelter. We can perhaps enjoy this attitude towards life at times but in the long run we would like to see the outcomes of our own actions bearing fruit. If life is to be considered a ride at all than it must be lived by us at the same time; we must understand that what surprises are to come and are in waiting round the next turn are caused by us, our actions, by our active involvement – we create the ride as we go along.

I personally look at life as a transitional phase. We are, as I believe through years of self-discovery, spiritual beings in a temporary physical vessel. Therefore, life could indeed be considered a ride, and we are the pilots of the vehicle that is our human form. The key is to constantly ask yourself if you are getting any enjoyment out of your current state. If the answer is ever no, start steering in another direction :)

I think the way to get the best from your time here is not necessarily a one size fits all scenario. The one you mention will be perfect for some peoplebut not for others. Some will need a more structured and regulated life than the type you mention while others will need to constantly strive. There is not a best way just a different one

Yes that little speech by bill hicks still makes me think,he seemed to imply that we reincarnate because he says that some people have been on the ride hundreds of time and calm us and assure us that "its just a ride".

if it is just a ride, then it's a great attitude. if its infinitely more than just a ride, then it's a terribly dangerous attitude. ignorance is bliss but is it worth the risk?

A good friend told me "if you are not living on the edge, your taking up too much space". I have a chronic illness, which has opened my eyes, life is too short and you should live everyday as you don't know what is round the corner. xx

I guess that's fine as long as you don't then assume you can ignore the feelings, needs, and concern for others while your on your ride....
