To convert it to a decimal, divide it by 100.
ex: 50% = 50/100 = 1/2
All percentages are out of 100%, which is considered the "total".
so 50% is only half of the total.

We can not do with out it. In fact you are constantly using it in one form or other. For eg you want to say 'you want half it' you can ask for 50% alternately. Because 50 is half of 100. It is useful to remember the following percentages.
1/3=33.33%
1/4=25%
1/10=10%
1/20=5%
You must have figured out how we get to these values. 1/4=25% because if you divide 100 by 4 we get 25.
suppose some one asks what is 13 % of 500
all you need to do is[13/100]*500=65
what percentage is 43 out of 172?
[43/172]*100=25%
got It?

i am not sure of your question, do you mean how to use the calculation of a percent, or how to, and when to use the calculation. the sum of the calculation is given in good examples above.
you can use the percentage calculation instead of or as well as the average, thus 100 eat snickers however 50 find them not value for money expressed as an average would be half as a percentage would be 50 % LF

if you mean percentage its raw number over total number multiplied by a hundred. so if your given like a total number and a percentage and you want to know the exact number simply multiply the total number by your percentage over 100. its like this:
10% of 100 so its 100 multiplied by 0.1 = 10.

percent = per + cent = per 100
% = divided by 100
eg:
1 % = 1/100
100% = 100/100 = 1
----------------
to convert into % = amount / total * 100%
eg:
5/10 = 5/10*100% = 50%
576/700 = 576/700*100% = 82.29%
