My recently deceased grandmother was born in this town/village. With national borders since redrawn, I believe it is now in Ukraine and has been renamed, but I can't find any further information.

There were apparently several villages with "Howilow" in their names. Howilow Wielki, Howilow Maly, Greater Howilow and Lessre Howilow.

I believe they were (or are) all near Khorostkov in Galacia - now in the Ukraine.

If you are trying to find more geneaological info on your granmother, try my link below to the Polish Genealogical Society of America.

Good luck

Yes. I think the town you are looking for is now called Khorostkov( formerly Chorostkow.)

There were villages in Poland with the name Howilow , associated with an independent parish in the town of Chorostkow as early as the beginning of the 17th century, and the villages of Chalupowka, Greater Howilow, Lesser Howilow, Karaczinze, Kalubinze, Meshaniecz, Prembilow, Ubisla and Viaczchubtza were linked with it.

Sometimes there are mentions in printed references to the Polish words "Howilow Wielki near Chorostkow in Galicia, Poland (now Ukraine)." This Polish word "wielki" just means "Great" or "greater", so it refers to the village of "Greater Howilow" . There evidently was a smaller village that was called "Howilow Maly" , or "Lesser Howilow" as well.

Chorostkow, is now known as Khorostkhov, Ukraine (some spellings in English are also Khorostikiv ).

There are several books and articles about Chosostkow (Khorostkhov), and the Jewish citizens who were killed during the WW2 era; Not all are translated into Engilsh. But books of reminiscences from survivors are available.

I hope this will be of use to you. My best wishes,

John B.
