Saddam was tried in an Iraqi court and found guilty of many capital offenses (genocide being one of them). The maximum allowable punishment is death, this is the court and law set up by Saddam (live by the sword die by the sword). The Iraqi law states that the death penalty is carried out by hanging (again law of the land set up by Saddam). If saddam is allowed to live it is believed by the Iraqi's that peace will never come to the land... old Saddam supporters would continue to rally and fight with the new government. About 80% of the country was oppressed by Saddam.

It is because of the western world's customary interpretation of executions. Death by shooting or by firing squad is considered an honorable death (especially in the military during times of war). This is the reason why military officers and soldiers prefer this method. It is interpreted as a hero's way to die and does not degrade the victim's personae. Death by other means (hanging, beheading, lethal injection, electric chair) are all considered un-honorable deaths, usually applied to common criminals.
This is the reason why Saddam Hussein was denied the opportunity of being executed by shooting, even though he asked for it.

people are shot everyday, but to walk that line to the rope would be total terrifying. To deface a person would be a better punishment than to be shot or sit or rot in some cell. To me that's a hanging and by the way they just hung him Friday. That's the worst thing they could have done to him

Most capital punishment methods are ancient. The same as it would have been in biblical times, in much of the world.

If hanging is done professionally, the neck breaks instantly, and there is no suffering whatsoever.

He asked for death by firing squad. Denied. This method is reserved only for warriors in a war or army. It is considered to be an honourable one.

Death by hanging is for common criminals. He was a criminal. He got what he deserved.

That's how they punish people there I would guess .....Plus hanging .....to me he's lucky he went out that way considering all the crap he has done ....I'm sure it was quick .....unlike getting shot you would just sit there and bleed to death.....a lot more slower and painful I'm sure.

They want to see him suffer. Long and slow horrible death.
It's pretty sick to me. I think a firing squad would have been better. Quick and easy.
