ADVANTAGES:
No spokes to loosen/keep adjusted.
No inner tube (can run tubeless/use tubeless patch kit on the road.

DISADVANTAGES:
If you bend/break a rim, you need to buy a whole new wheel, instead of just a rim.

For a sportbike it is done primarily to lose unsprung weight and rotational mass, the best thing for handling in a quick turning situation like a chicane. The person at the top is absolutely right. You have a lot of goofy answers here other than his. The answer for cruisers and standards - could be argued that it is that they hold up better over time, easier to work with (spokes, rust). The question is asked in the context of performance so I am guessing that you are asking about sportbikes. If you are curious re why people put them on other styles of bikes other answers hold some validity. Truthfully? Most people get them because they look cool and possibly to get different sizes of tires available to them. They are expensive!

the rim is stronger than the spoked rims. better for riding 2-up. and since u dont have to deal with making sure the spokes are tight, it's 1 less thing to worry about.
downside tho, if u mess up a rim, u gotta replace the rim. generally, if u crash hard enough, u'll have to replace the whole bike.
keep the rubber down.

Alloy wheels don't 'flex' going through high speed corners

Lighter wheels improve handling one way, by keeping your tires on the pavement better on rough roads and of course less weight is less load on your engine.

Steel wheels will only bend when you crash into the gutter, alloy wheels brake.

generally it is done because the bike turns quicker because the lighter wheels give less rotational mass
