Lost as in, drive NOT seen in My Computer? Or do you mean you are unable to burn anything?
In either case it may be that the drive just died, it happens.
What I could suggest is the following, (For XP)
1. Does it power on?
Can you open drive to place disk in it? Does drive spin up? Light blinks on outside of drive? If so this means drive is somewhat functional.
2.. If you do not see drive in My Computer,
Right Click on My Computer>Manage, then click on Disk management in left payne. If you do not see drive in right payne, click word action>rescan disks. If still not there close and proceed.
3. Right click on My Computer>properties>Hardware tab>Device manager button. In the device manager click + next to DVD/CD+ROM. Drive should be listed.
If no listing drive is dead, replace
If there is a listing (and you know your having problems with drive) right click and uninstall it. Restart computer.
On restart windows should install the drive. (which solves lots of problems)
4. Every drive has a model number.(sticker on top of drive)Research problems and possible firmware updates here.

5. If your problem is just burning related, why not get Nero here.

Combo CD/RW/DVD/R's are cheap now a days, can I suggest a few links?

If you still have the disk which came with the burner, then just put the disk in and follow the instructions. Anouther method which is acceptable is Add/remove Hardware in the Control Panel.

right click my computer left click properties and open the hard ware tag find your missing hardware here. click on it and click on uninstall then restart the computer this should recognise the "new" hardware and install the software. then run windows update. if this fails go to the burners manufacturers web site and see if there is an update.

~Burner to what? I'll guess here, it's software. Find the disk and uninstall then reinstall. If you can't do that, contact the manufacturer.~
