Sapphires are the second hardest gem. The hardest gem is a diamond. If you purchased this gem from a jeweler he would have been able to show you the magnification of the gem.

Blue Sapphire is Corrundum (Al2O3). It has a hardness 9 and specific gravity 4. From hardness, you can get an idea whether it is genuine or fake. But you cannot confirm its identity at home, unaided by proper instruments.
