diversity in a country?

is diversity a strength or a liability in a country?

I think if things are to diverse it creates problems. Ive also witnessed culture wars right within my own community. The way things used to be done are slowly changing by immigrants etc, and the outcome is hate coming from both sides. I think the people who are making a new home in any new land should respect and embrace the culture that already exists. I know I would if I was calling a new land my home. Its also good to learn from others, and learn thier ways. I have just noticied lately that lots of immigrants are trying to change things. This is not good for our own american culture. I mean look at how diverse some of the Middle East countries are. They have jew, muslims, and all kinds of different cultures and its not somewhere I would want to be with all the violence.

Diversity is always touted as a positive force in the development of nations but there are so many pros and cons I personally don't know anymore.
I am British and work in Uganda at the moment. In Uganda people belong to tribes and what ever leader is in power his tribe will benefit most. Everyone sticks to their own kind.
In the muslim world they are bound by their religion that transcends borders. Most immigrants to the U.K stick in their own cultural enclaves and do not want full integration as it erodes identity, which when you live in a foreign country becomes more important than ever - I know from experience.
Many muslims in the U.K say they owe no allegience to Britain. July 2005 showed just what a bad thing this is.
Economically, diversity seems to work, but politically and in a religious sense it can be a disaster. In Britain the government is desperately juggling tolerance, political correctness and a fear of the genuine enemy within. It's not working in my opinion.
The Netherlands has always been famed for it's liberal, laid back and tolerant attitude to just about everyone, but with the assassination of Theo Van Gogh and the rise in muslim extemism there, even this is changing.
It's a big and complicated subject and a good question but I could go on with so many examples of both sides my head would probably explode.

I believe its definitely a strength, granted its not all sunshine and rainbows, but imagine a country where its all white, protestant, conservatives. It would be bland, totally not worth living there...with diversity you get more option, more freedom to express yourself, plus it makes you more open to new ideas, cultures, societies. In countries where diversity isnt as prevalent as it is in most countries (like the US) there is more animosity between the different peoples

I think it can be both. It all depends on each individual country. They can either use the diversity to their advantage by getting to know them better by giving them as much opportunity as they can to their citizens. Or to their disadvantage by "ethnic cleansing" - like what former Yugoslavia did to "others". But in my humble opinion, Diversity is something a country should be proud of.

I think it can be both- an advantage and a disadvantage! i am an Indian! so seeing the state of my country i think that diversity sometimes causes problem. we in India live with different religions so it takes very little time for a fight (sometimes even a riot) to start in the name of religion. but i love India's diversity. there are so many food delicacies, so many holidays and festival we all celebrate together! its fun!!. i have friends of all caste and it is sheer joy to learn their languages and traditions!

I believe it to be a strength. It forces us to learn to appreciate multiple viewpoints and cultures. Lack of diversity leads to the danger of closed minds
