I had the problem. They were living under the porch roof, and would only come in when there was a drought. It took years but when I finally found out where they were, I replaced the wood they had infested. Now they are gone for good.

Ants come into the house for various reasons. You can have a clean counter top but if they are looking for a new place to live they will just cut across the counter and into the other side of the building. There are those that go for sugary items too.
Best way I have found is Raid in a container with a trigger spray. I hate aerosols they go all over the place. Spray all your entrance ways doors and windows inside and outside, along the baseboards of the home. If its really bad pay the exterminator to look for the nests its worth it.

Inside the best and safest to use is a gel bait.Determining on the kind of ant will tell you what kind to buy. There are two kinds of gelbait (sweet flaver and grease flaver)Sweet is proubly your best bet.Put a small amount on a piece of tape and place in the areas you see the ants but out of the reach of children and pets. You Must find where they are getting in at.then go outside and you will most likely find a trail of them. The best, safest product to use is a granular (looks like dirt or sand)Throw around the yard where you see them.Rain will not wash away this bait but help spread it.It's safe to use in yards where pets are.
Good luck

I had the same problem (and to those wise guys, ants in your home isn't a sign that you're dirty!) They were coming in from the plumbing under my sink & dishwasher area . Each morning I'd see a bunch of em in that area (and yes, the sink was clean & empty!). It could be worse, they coulda be roaches EWWWWWWW!!!
Basically, all I could do was spary the area every 3-4 days. This seemed to work best. I think I'm going to give that Rosemary oil a go!

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.
I found the information at http://www.pests.in useful.

Instructions
STEP 1: Determine why they are entering your property and eliminate the food, water and/or housing that they need to survive.
STEP 2: Promptly clean after meals and take all trash out of your home.
STEP 3: Move outdoor trash and recycling bins as far from your home as possible.
STEP 4: Tightly wrap and store food set out on kitchen counters.
STEP 5: Refrigerate all perishable food, especially in the summer, when fruits and vegetables may spoil quickly.
STEP 6: Remove pools of standing water. Ants get thirsty too.
STEP 7: Seal up cracks. The least toxic method is 100 percent silicon caulk.
STEP 8: Sprinkle powdered red chili pepper, paprika, dried peppermint or borax on ant trails, in cracks and near entryways to deter them from moving in.
STEP 9: Rid your garden of aphids, whiteflies and mealybugs. These sap-feeding insects excrete "honeydew," a sugary favorite of ants.
STEP 10: Spray or paint sticky barriers made out of tanglefoot products on plants and trees. These barriers prevent ants from climbing up stems and trunks to feed.
STEP 11: Create liquid bait by mixing 1 tsp. boric acid with 2 1/2 fluid oz. corn syrup or honey. Heat until the boric acid dissolves. In an eyedropper, add equal amounts of water and solution to drop in places ants frequent for 2 weeks.
STEP 12: Make a natural repellent of citrus peelings and water in a blender and pour it over the anthill.
STEP 13: Drown out ants by pouring boiling water over the mounds and into the cracks where they dwell. Roughly 3 gallons

My flat mate got rid of our ants by pouring vinegar everywhere and then throwing salt on it. It worked but it stank!
