To avoid being identified by the public. A lot of people might try to take revenge on the executioner if they knew who did the deed. It's to protect them against reprisal from supporters of the person being executed.

Being an executioner is only a part-time job. They don't know until sometimes the last minute that they have to go do a hanging. They were out sticking up a grocery store when they got the call to hang Saddam....so they raced right over...mask and all.

So the executioner isn't recognized. That would be kinda awkward to see the executioner at the store. "Hey Joe how are the kids?" Also so the family of the deceased wouldn't take out vengeance on the executioner.

Executioners wear masks as a way of symbolizing the grim reaper.

Originally it was to protect them from reprisals from the victims family. Eventually it was a moot point because many places required the condemned or their family to pay the executioner to ensure they'd get a shift death as a result they knew who the executioner was before hand anyway.

Well i did say maybe they might be one of his ex-guards or people that are expected to do such. The truth of the matter is that THEY ARE IRAQIS and it will be very embarrasing for people outside the country to see them execute their president.

I believe that the burden of being the person who ends another life, legally or not, is so great that anonymity protects them from being sought out for harassment, revenge, or even thanks.

To be anonymous - it's not supposed to be personal. The firing squad would be another way to achieve this.
