Member of the Order of the British Empire, it is the lowest ranked honour given out, next is the OBE Order of the British Empire, and the the CBE, Commander of the Order of the British Empire

My dad recieved this for services to the medical profession & to services to the community in 1998, he was a GP in Liverpool & worked as a doctor for 35yrs.

MBE stands for My Bloody Efforts - as opposed to Other Buggers Efforts for the OBE.
MBEs are given for local work, OBEs for national work. Officially they mean Member of the British Empire & Order of the British Empire, but the official names don't tell us much about what they get awarded for.
