If you open the gas filler door you will see the minimun octane reccomendation. Since both cars are 2003 models that should be 91. The older model BMW`s may very well take the 87 octane. Some will say that it doesnt matter, I might put a lesser octane in the 330 and stop if the engine starts to ping but the M3 would nothing but the 91.

MAKES NO DIFFERENCE! I HAVE SEVERAL MECHANICS AND COMBUSTION ENGINE ENGINEERS IN THE FAMILY WHO SAY THIS FIRST HAND. You will get better performance with higher octane obviously, but it will not harm your engine or reduce its life expentancy in a high compression engine like a BMW. Actually, it is high octane use in a low compression engines that can cause damage. SO bottom line. If you want to save a few bucks and sacrifice some performance use the lower octane without any worries.

Always put in the highest octane rating you can get. These engines can rev at redline level till the tank runs empty for decades - but only if you put excellent fuel (built for a minimum of 95-98 octane).
