Notes from the Underground by Dostoevsky

The main character is an isolated, alienated, self-hating individual, who even after he tries to connect with others, fails miserably. He suffers self-humiliation and also tries to humiliate others - anyway, the end is the lonely abyss.

Dont be so hard on yourself! You are only 14! Most people dont have a boyfriend when they are that young, and if they do its usually nothing serious. Also you really don't need a boy to make you happy or feel good about yourself! You are so young! You don't need to be in love right now, just enjoy being a kid! Im sure you are pretty and one day you will find a boy who loves you, but dont just sit around moping until you do! There is so much more to life than boys! Make goals for yourself, think of other things you want to do like travel or make money or have a successful career or make friends or go to university or play a sport. And keep reading :) There is nothing wrong with wanting to escape reality for awhile. Plus reading makes you smarter. Good Luck and try to cheer up! I know sometimes things seem bad but just think of the millions of people out there who have it way worse than you. You really are very lucky, sometimes you just have to look at things from another angle.

I otherwise like Shobhaa De but anyone will agree 'Second thoughts' is the most boring, if not depressing book. For 1 month after reading it, I didn't wish to touch another book!
What can be more sickening than the story of a lonely, neglected and as a result unfaithful housewife whose husband ignores her desires and whose lover too merely uses her. She becomes much like the 'Dhobi ka kutta...' Yuck! a totally pathetic experience!!!

A Cambodian Odyssey
by Dr. Haing Ngor

It is a true story about the millions of people who were starved, tortured, killed and force into hard labor by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.
The book is very well written and commands your attention from beginning to end.
The events and circumstances are shocking, sad, and depressing.
It is so powerful that I have read it 3 times over the years.

"Don't ever Tell" by Kathy O'Beirne

Her memories of her childhood with an abusive father, being shunted off into an irish industrial school at age 7 where she was raped continously by the priest, moved to a psychiatric hospital were they used electroshock treatment on her because no child in their right mind would accuse a priest of rape, and then finally spending her teens in Magdalen Laundry were she was raped again and had a child at age 13. Terrible!

Every book ever written by Jonathon Aycliffe. Ugh. Dreary, depressing, makes you want to jump off the nearest cliff.
