Apple MacBook

Always get as much RAM and the biggest hard drive you can afford. No-one ever complained about having too much storage space

EDIT
A few people are recommending IBM laptops.
It is worth noting that IBM don't make laptops anymore.
They sold that arm of their business to Lenovo so that's the brand to chase up if you want to take their advice.

My preference for Macs is based on years of using both formats and deciding that I was tired of all the problems I had with Wintel machines.
However there is no doubting that there are a lot of great Wintel laptops out there. It's just that in my experience, for the same money, an equivalent Mac is great+a bit more.

My daughter is a photography major. She started out with a Dell. This is a nice computer but could not handle all of her needs for pictures. We got her an apple and she has no problems with doing her pictures. At work I have an HP and Dell and both will lock up when we do a lot of pictures. Spend the money on Apple it is worth it. If you are a student Apple will give you a discount,

I am a computer engineer so i advice you to buy a sony vaio with 80GB hard disk. There is one touch button in which you can make a music cd just in seconds!!! If you can't afford it my 2nd choice is IBM think pad with intel core2 duo processor for better performance. All the computers and laptop's i own are of IBM . It is the best pc i have ever seen. You can have better quality pictures or movies for the LCD screen. So i advice that you can have the trust on IBM and have it no time.

Acer 5102, its only like 750 dollars and it has a dual core processor with a webcam 120 gb hd. and I can even run really high tech games on it.
The best thing is that it is not filled with all that crap that HP comps have like 3 months of AOL or something, get this laptop you wont be disappointed.
Don't get a MAC because they can get complicated, and they are very expensive, and too uniform, apple is trying to make everyone look the same... tsk tsk tsk

I would get an acer because they are reasonably priced and are reliable. I have just purchased an acer 5601 AWLMI and love it. I had an acer desktio that was 11 years old and still going strong but it was getting slow so I got rid of it Definatley get an acer

If it is just for music, pictures, and school work, it doesn't need to be too powerful. Dell has some laptops for things like that...check 'em out.

If you can afford it - get the MacBook or MacBook Pro.
If you're on a budget, get a second hand G4 iBook. They are awesome, easy to use and perfect for your needs!
