I teach both IELTS and TOEFL. Generally speaking, my Indian immigrant students take IELTS. Most of the English taught in India is British English and IELTS is also based in British English.
Overall, I think it is easier to study for and pass TOEFL because it is multiple choice and answering them requires less skill. The speaking in TOEFL is more difficult because you only speak for 1 min and not to a person but to a computer.
IELTS is more difficult to study for because their are many varieties of how to answer. The speaking part is a 15 min interview with a real person, which makes it much easier to demonstrate your communication skills. So unless you've been living in the US for a while, I would say IELTS is better for you to take.
