Different areas have different permits and at different costs. Most tourist offices sell permits for their beaches etc in the UK but some areas have other arrangements. There is no one permit that will allow you to use your metal detector anywhere.

Edit your question and say where it is you want to detect and I'll try to help more. Otherwise you could look at the UK National Council for Metal Detecting website here: http://www.ncmd.co.uk/ which provides loads of information if you are just starting out.

There is no such thing in the UK. What you do need, preferably in writing, is the permission of the land owner where you are conducting a search. If possible you should also come to an agreement as to how you share any profitable finds as the landowner will own what ever you do find. If it turns out that you find some gold or very old artifacts then you will have no claim to them.
Happy New Year.

Cost? I have never heard of such a thing in the U.S. Digging on someone's property could be a problem, but a permit would not help with that. You would need permission from the property owner.

why would you need a permit? using a metal detector is not like going on an archeological expedition. you can use them on any public land, as long as you don't dig huge holes in parks or disrupt the wildlife.
