Well you can't really pin this on anyone except the person who stole it and yourself. Unfortunately, you probably can't get anything from the teacher or the school. Most schools have it in writing somewhere that they aren't responsible for any lost or stolen items. They advise students not to bring anything valuable to school. (Of course, this is complete bull 'cause school is one of the best places to use an ipod) I would get the principal to email the teachers with a description of your ipod and when it was stolen to keep them looking out for someone with it. Make sure your friends know about what happened too. And try not to say too much to your friend that got it taken away, because they probably already feel horrible.

Everybody has to answer to somebody, in your case, if the principal doesn't act SOON, have your mom make a call to the school Superintendent. A Superintendent is the big boss. You'll get your ipod back so fast it'll make your head spin!

p.s.
teacher probably still has it! she gave it to her own kid!

It's their responsibility. They made the rules and if they take something away they have to take care of it. you probably paid a lot of money for this ipod. Make sure this situation is handled professionally. Don't let them take advantage of you! Fight to get it back even if they have to pay for a new one...

Well, since your teacher had it while it was stolen, it's actually her fault and she's responsible for it. Good luck trying to convince her though!!
