Keep paying the bill every time renewal comes around.
You can get 3 year licences at
http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/registrar/search.asp?isc=goox2001av
but I think that's as long as it goes at this point.

The domain names can be registered for a maximum of ten years. You typically end up paying about $9-$10 a year (the price depends on which domain you are asking, and is highest for .com, and is typically very low for .name, or .biz, or .in domains) and you can make a ten year straight payment at the start itself.
The next thing to do is to keep hosting a small website or an email server and continuously use it and modify it. The rights to your domain name expire at the end of the ten year period; and if it can be shown by your successor that the website was not adequately used, you may have to vacate the name. The history of changes done to the website, the frequency of use, etc. data is available to ICANN.
Finally, when you get the renewal notice, please pay up before the first deadline without fail.
Trust this helps :-)
P.S. : Also hope that the successor of Bill Gates does not decide to open a company with name matching your desired website - you may have to face a few problems then :-)

You can contact a local ISP in your area to register your domain name. Or, you can use one of the free services on the web to register the name.
You can use google to register a free domain at:

You can't at once. You can just renew at max, every 10 years, paying a yearly registar fee.
