You should get a broad-based (no pun intended) education. Be cautious of liberal professors and their leftist stupid bird brained disaster proned hatred of America baloney hypocrite crap!
If you can do that, you'll be a fine citizen.

First, educate yourself. If you want to make good films and be respected, learn about the world, culture, how people think, how to challenge authority, how to win and lose in conflicts. Gain experience, empathy, and understanding of others who are different from you. In film school you will learn the craft of making films. But then you need to put something worthwhile into those films.
People tell you to choose a field that you are interested in. But, you don't know what you don't know. Go out and explore. There is so much you don't know about. Go out there and learn about things you never had a chance to learn about. It takes courage. Do it anyway. If you don't, you will never know.
Good Luck

i know a lot people will try to put you down, especially when you're in the arts area. i dont believe film school is a waste of time. but being a movie director does involve a lot of time and commitment. i mean, making a movie doesn't take just a couple of days. if you really are serious about it and you really believe that is what you want in life, then go for it. if you really love to do films, then why would you let a couple comments put you down?

Short answer: undergraduate school isn't supposed to be vocational training. Study the subject matter that interests you the most. The point of a liberal arts education is the scope and breadth of your studies; the choice of major merely gives you the opportunity to examine one particular field in depth.
Take a degree in the field of your choice; as you're working towards it, the next step(s) will become much clearer to you.

Sometimes it's not what you take in college that is as imporant as who you meet in college.
If you are going to film directing, you should emerse yourself with it and go for it. I wouldn't rule out taking acting classes or psycology, either. You will have advisors who can help you do that.
Good luck!

My best sugestion for anyone new to college is to get your core (basic classes) out of the way. Your advisor can tell you what classes are needed in your particular fild.
Ive found that college students change majors like they change socks.

Study to get good grades.
Read, read, read, to uncover the lies that your professors are telling you. (diverse sources) Always be suspect of assigned readings (books) This doesn't apply to Math majors.

Take theater if that doesn't work out you can always do psychology later. Just do what interests you. IF you do something you are not interested in you will be miserable.
