i was wondering, the 3 of the the four quadricep muscles in the thigh, vastus madialis, vastus lateralis and vastus intermedialis. all have the word vastus before there position within the leg. as well as the fourth quadricep femoris rectus, they all attach to and around the knee. if any one could help, and tell me what the word vastus refers to ?

Definition of vastus :

means "great muscle."

It means wide, huge, big, etc. That's where the word "vast" was derived.
