I want to start an african cichlid tank but what can i put in there with them? For example snails, shrimp, or plants. I want to start a salt water tank without using a 90 gallon tank. What is the smallest tank you can start a salt water tank in.

All cichlids are aggressive. They will attack most other fish and even each other. A snail or two should be fine. The shrimp would be gone in seconds! I would suggest artificial plants. The cichlids usually mess up the live ones.
You can start a ten gallon salt water tank if you have a lot of time to devote to it. The smaller the tank the bigger the swing in chemicals and things. A 40 or 50 would be better. It is best to let the tank stabilize for a while before adding fish. Start with some coral, anemones etc. first. After a a couple of months introduce your fish slowly.
Good luck!

The smallest salt water tank an EXPERIENCED fish owner could have is maybe a 10-20 gallon. But if you're just starting out the larger the tank is the better off you'll be. It'll make the environment more stable because of the large volume of water. Having more water makes any change in pH or salinity take longer before becoming too extreme. So it'll be more likely that you can catch it in time before it kills your fish. Which will be even more costly.

African Cichlids are aggressive. I have a large snail in my tank a plechostomas (forgive my spelling) and some cat fish. I also have large Tojo eels and large clown loaches. Depends on the siz of your cichlids. When they are full grown they are beautiful and are eye catching enough to have them alone in a tank.

African cichlids are freshwater. They also eat snails and shrimp, and many people complain that they constantly uproot their plants.
