sometimes i get a window 'there was a problem ......your hardware might not work properly' yet it will work on my friends laptop ok

You running XP? If so, there shouldn't be a problem. The normal process is to install the software first, without the drive plugged in, and it will tell you when to connect. T'other way is just to plug the drive in (USB I presume) and let your system do the detecting.

If all else fails, you should be able to download a driver from the manufacturers' website

See if someone can burn you a full-sized CD for installation, or see if you can download the drivers from the drive manufacturer.

What OS are you using? You shouldn't have a problem in WinXP, maybe not in Win2K/ME, but probably will in Win98.
