There are multiple methods even mammals use. A jackrabbit in the desert has long ears. While the blood flows through the ears, it cools slightly, thus cooling the entirety of it's body. A mammal, when cold, may shiver, small spasms, creating muscle activity. Muscle activity gets the blood flowing faster, warming the body. The water contained within a cell has its own heating and cooling property. Fur protects against wind sheer, reducing wind chill factor. The list goes on and on.

Animals in the north such as polar bears and moose stay warm because they have 2 layers of fur. The soft undercoat and the long hollow fur that insulates them by trapping air and preventing moisture from reaching the skin. Many domestic animals have the same type of coat. A horse or pony that is not pampered with a blanket will have snow remain on its back for hours, and it doesn't melt because they are insulated by there coat even though heat rises and it should melt
