Depends on how they were granted the life estate. By definition, a life estate is valid until the death of the individual that the right was given to.

Some wills leave a 'life estate for as long as they live there' which isn't really a life estate. They only way to tell is to have a lawyer read all the paperwork involved.

Always see a lawyer specializing in wills and estates. Questions like these can be answered only generally speaking because provinces, states and countries themselves have different laws. On this site alone many participants are from all over Canada and the USA (and perhaps even more countries). They can only tell you what is relevant for their jurisdiction.
