If this question is about their batting prowess, I think it has to be Ricky Ponting. He always rise to the occasion. I don't think Sachin Tendualkar or for that matter Brian Lara has as many match winning innings as Ricky Ponting has. All three are great players. However, what is the use of their greatness unless their respective team/country is not benefited from their performances. It is proven that whenever there is a crisis or there is an important match like say semi final or final Sachin Tendulkar fails. Even if he plays a good knock in such a situations, he has failed to extend this knock to make his team won. Brain Lara I think is very uncertain. On his day he can do anything, but his team can not depend on him and if if they depend it is not assured that he will deliver. Ricky ponting is dependable and always delivers. He is man in the crisis. He is consistent. That is why I think Ricky Ponting is best amongst three.

Ponting is the best..He is climbing in the ladder of fame and glory with many records in his hands....He is nearing the number of centuries scored by sachin in test matches...
Ofcourse Lara and Sachin are also very good players....
But Ponting will overtake both of them very soon if he continues to play well as he does it at present....
So Ponting is the best with his very good average...

as i read this question it fills me with dread because i know that all the indians are going to be saying
"sachin", "how could you even ask..." and so on and so forth.
so i thought i would be different.
they all are very good in their own right.
lara has held the record for highest test score twice. sachin has not even scored a triple hundred.
ponting is going to, easily, surpass sachins test centuries record very very soon.
on reading this the infuriated indians (i do not mean to be racist, i am an indian for gods sake) will say "but sachin has crossed 25000+ runs in both forms of the game" but you must keep in mind he started at age of 17 or 18 (i think) so people must remember the number of matches hes played. 375+ ODI's and 120+ tests.
he has never, if not rarely, been dropped. ponting began his career later than sachin. in australia players begin their careers very late, look at stuart clarke. if they got to play 375+ matches then things would be very different.
lara is a very good test player but then loses out in ODI's.

So ponting is the best.
