Is there a special reason we drop the huge lit up ball for each new year, or is it just one of those things we just do? A friend from Australia said, they celebrate just by counting down and sometimes lighting a few fireworks. I've noticed other countries doing other various things.

Isn't it kind of ironic that we "drop the ball" when that phrase in slang (drop the ball) typically means to fail or mess up... for a holiday full of resolutions not to keep messing up.... hahaha
