The sad truth is if you don't have some gun-power, it's only a matter of time before someone realizes you have something they want or need and you have no way of preventing them from taking it. Of course the question is, does the military use the power to defend the nation (a much more civilized use) or does it turn the power loose on less powerful nations or even it's own citizens (both are pretty lousy and far less civilized). In the latter case, "civilization" is only a facade, a thin veneer to cover the up the nation's true character (or lack thereof).

What do you call a "civilized world"? There may have been some people that didn't have a "military power", but if they didn't they either don't exist now or you most likely wouldn't call them "civilized".
Even the person that talks of military power as a defense is saying that military power is needed.
Military power doesn't have to be a gun, but it always must exist to the extent that other life will not consume what you or what you have. This is true at a cell level, it is true at the world, and the universe level.

If weapons are outlawed then only outlaws will have weapons. Those that have gun-power are those that "make" the world stay civilized. There can be no authority unless that authority has the means to enforce it's authority. There is not a human being alive today any more "civilized" then those that existed 50,000 years ago. We just know some more stuff.. which makes us 1,000 times more dangerous than those that came before us. Saying that any people on this planet is "civilized" is a gross overstatement.

YES, oppressors and oppressed
Civilizations are built by power not by being meek. Every civilization in history was built on the ashes of a previous one.If you want to join a civilized world bring a gun.

Without military power we could not defend civilization from the barbaric terrorist hordes who want to destroy the civilized world and take us back to the way the desert nomads lived in the 7th century.

Military might is directly related to social content. A state without sufficient military strength to defend itself against potentially hostile neighbours is, by default, a state rife with military anxieties. Better to have a population content enough to complain about military overspending than a population constantly peering over it's metaphorical shoulders in fear.

Felix is right. Those who say a military in unneccesary need to learn more history. Just start as far back in human history as you can and then draw the line where humans should put down their sticks and rocks or swords or whatever.

As far as I am concerned. I wish a military power was never even dreamed of. It would have been better if people had learned to get along without EVER needing one.
Sorry, but this dates back to the "Tower of Bable" in the Old Testament.

Every group on the face of the planet has the means to defend itself or its interests.
There is no such thing as a 'peaceful non-armed' group anywhere.
Those that tried that route were swallowed up by their neighbors and other larger groups have had to step in to protect them.

it just shows the sick mind of the person and their followers. military power and dictators hinder the growth and manifestation of ideas. good ideas would be suppressed and only what the dictator thinks would happen. no military power is not necessary
