For your own peace of mind, call your doctor and tell him exactly what you have stated here. I have had 3 children and from what I remember, is that you can lose the plug and not have contractions begin for a couple of weeks. If you are bleeding, you need to contact the doctor right away. Better to be safe than sorry. I wish you a happy and healthy baby. Take care of yourself. God bless.

A mucus plug usually looks like a thick blob of stringy clear/white mucus with streaks of red blood, only occasionally just pinkish tinged. Brownish is usually a sign of old blood.
The mucus plug is produced in the cervix. Some women loose it all at once, while others loose it a little at a time. It is a sign your cervix is thinning out, maybe dilating some. (Keep in mind some women don't loose their mucus plug until they are completely dilated and ready to push out their baby!)
Many women who loose their mucus plug will go into labor within 24 - 48 hours. This is most likely if there are definite streaks of blood mixed with the mucus. If you don't go into labor within 24 - 48 hours the cervix will re-make the plug. Then it could be another 2 or 3 weeks until labor begins.
It doesn't sound like you need to go to the doctor or hospital. Wait until you are having good strong contractions. Otherwise you are likely to get induced which has a high incidence of leading to a cesarean.

You will not usually have contractions immediately after loosing the mucus plug. But that baby is coming soon (within a couple of days)! Good luck!

assuming you are full term, and everything is OK with the pregnancy, the slight spotting is not all that out of the usual. If you have a "gush" of water and or feel like you peed on your self it is a sign that your water broke. My wife never lost her "mucus plug" till her water broke. If the spotting gets worse go to the ER.

The plug can be lost at any point, and sometimes the water can not break until they do it for you, and the REAL contractions hit harder and faster once the water breaks. Most women loose the plug and not even know it or see it...

If your water hasn't broken you're alright. Believe me, as a mother of two, I know and have been there, done that.
You will KNOW when you're ready. Water breaking is very noticeable.
Unless you start having contractions (yeeeoooow!) or your water breaks, you're okay not to go to the hospital yet.
