Well, there really is no "top religious leader" in America. Though the majority of the people are Christian and a great number of them Catholic, even the Pope has very little sway in these matters.
But let's assume it's the Pope, and we'll say that he is directly opposed to execution.

To say that there's no top religious leader is pretty short sighted folks. The Christian Coalition, founded by a troll named Pat Robertson, is systematically infiltrating the government, and infecting people with their "Christian Right" agenda. They are gaining more and more popularity by distracting voters with meaningless issues and petty agreements.

There really isn't a top religious leader in the U.S. Too many different religions, too many separate church leaders. We like it that way here in the U.S. Our ancestors fought for our freedom to give all of us that gift.

We don't have a top religious leader in the US. We have several representing many differing faiths.
It's that church/state thing

I don't know about the religous leader...Billy Ghram maybe? I don't know but the Bible states that you are to obey your goverments laws. Yeah I know that could get condtridicorty or however you spell it...considering that some laws for some goverments could be total sins...but thats everything in the Bible isn't it?
