The first step would be to warn the party in question, in writing, that they should cease the accusations, failing which you will seek compensation for any damages caused by their actions.

You may also ask for a written apology/written withdrawal of their statements to be published/delivered.

If damage has already been caused - you can set out what the damage is, and demand compensation.

It follows that the damages need to be quantifiable and provable - forget trying to sue for 'pain and suffering' as you will probably be throwing money away.

If they do not stop, you can apply to court for an injunction, to prevent them from doing further damage. You can then follow with a court action to recover any damages you have suffered.

Obviously - you need a lawyer - this is just a brief overview of the possibilities.

Hire a high priced lawyer.
Have him send a letter to anyone who offends you a letter threatening legal action.
.
The world is ruled by lawyers.
.
No, really, give other people the respect that they are smart enough to see through much of this garbage.
Sometimes negative publicity is better than no publicity.

If you can't afford the lawyer, find an approach to make lemonade out of opportunities the negative press creates.
.
However, sometimes, you do have little choice other than the legal route if you can PROVE that REAL DAMAGE is being done.

If you are the defendant in a lawsuit- you can simply deny the allegations. It is up to the plaintiff to prove the allegations- In a civil case (non-criminal) they, the plaintiff must prove by "preponderance of the evidence" that they are right.

I suppose your redress will be for you to go to the Courts where it will determine the redess to be made to you if an amicable out of Court settlement cannot be made or a retraction of what it is that you are accused of.
