This is a very subjectable questions. Dragons like most mythilogical creatures hold that allure in our hearts and mind as things to be feared, in part because of the stories that led them to come about in the first place. Humans have the most fear for the unknown. Like the nearly prey like animals they are, seeing as in the animal world there bodies are fleshy, not hard to penitrate. Dragons generally appear to have sharp claws and are of a massively large size then say a horse or even a home. Humans also seem cast out from the natural world. Wild animals being rather out of touch with the homo sapiens you know. Like the mentioned Satan aspect. That helps too, what we perceive as evil! Something so oddly beautiful it must be the work of Lucifer, attempting to taint our souls to gain power. Huge, Sharp teeth/beak, razor claws, unimaginable power. All things we cant control and thus have a instantious fear of.

This is a good question, considering that in China dragons can be good/lucky creatures. One thing to consider is that in the Middle Ages, everything was about religion. In almost all stories, the dragon/serpent/worm (yeah, they actually used the word worm) represented pagan beliefs. So when St. George kills the dragon, he's symbolically conquering paganism, and when St. Patrick banishes the snakes from Ireland, he's symbolically banishing paganism. Since Church rhetoric considered the pagans evil, so the dragons became evil.

Imagine u with a sword trying to defend your livestock from a creature that can fly and can spit fire from a distance. It is the equivalent of trying to shoot down a modern jet with an AK47. If you look at that way the problem wasen´t how much they ate or how bad they were it was that THERE WAS NO EFFECTIVE WAY TO STOP THEM. Hence the fear hate and finally labeling them as evil creatures.

in the early times people were very very very superstitious and had alot of weird thoughts and beliefs.
If dragons did exist i believe that it was just after the ice age that there was the last of the dargons and their cave or hide out was somewhere high in the mountains and this dragon had no means of survival. At this time the people that were around had no education and no sense of thought what so ever!!
I believe that in order to survive the dragon began to steel live stock from local farmers and attack just to get something to eat. the people saw this fire breathing creature and could not comprehend it's existince and became alrmed and extra scared. and in order to save their livelyhood and lives they desighned for the hope of people knights and dragon slayers and so it goes on...

have you ever thought that dragons was their way of explaining early UFO visitations? even the bible casts a reasonable thought that humans were visited by UFO's throughout time. just look at how the texts describe these "chariots of fire".
it could be seen in a simalar way in those midieval times as their only way to describe something like a UFO, by making them beast in the air that roar and spit fire, engulf both man and cattle... think about it.

During the M.A., Christianity emphasized and deemed the snake and the dragon as symbols of the devil. So, the people saw both as the very roots of evil, condemning the dragon as "evil" itself.
