You should take a pregnancy test once you have missed a period to get the best results. It is possible to have a period and still be pregnant.

A woman should get a positive test 10-16 days after ovulation. In other words, anywhere from 3 days before, to a few days after her period would be due. It's safe to wait 2 weeks after sexual contact, and if the test is negative, you can be pretty sure you're not pregnant. People DO get negative tests after that time period and find out later that they're indeed pregnant, but it's pretty rare. HCG levels double every 2-3 days in early pregnancy, so if a period is late and the woman gets a negative, it's a good idea to test every two days or so, and if it's REALLY late, go to a doctor to see what's going on.
My grandmother and a few other women I've known had something like a period during their pregnancies. I'm not sure what the medical explanation is, but I know it can and does happen sometimes. It's usually much lighter than a normal period though.
Sometimes though, what seems to be a positive test followed by a period is really a very early miscarriage. A woman gets excited, takes a test a little before or around the time that her period was due, and it's positive. A week later she gets her period. The test wasn't wrong in most cases....she really was pregnant and had a very early loss. Happens more than we care to know. If we didn't have such sensitive HPTs, we would never have known we were pregnant and would just think our period was a week late. Most very early miscarriages require no medical intervention and complete on their own. Sad but true.

you should wait a week or two to take a test after your missed period. If you get a positive result and a few days later start to bleed you should contact your doctor right away or go to the hospital.
