I finally upgraded and bought two more RAM sticks, plugged them both in, and the computer wouldn't boot. After a little trial and error (verified both sticks are good), I found out that the fourth slot was the issue.

Probably nothing to do about it, huh?

I did flash the BIOS very recently (within the last couple of weeks).

And it's a P4, so one slot = 1 bank.

And it's a SONY (yeah, boo on me), over two years old, so there probably won't be any warranty.

My guess it's either do what the first person suggested and just max out the first three slots, or replace the mobo, which probably won't be worth it on this system.

If the fourth slot is bad there really is not much to do except if possible purchase the largest size RAM stick for the other 3 slots up to the maximum your Mother board will support.

it can sometimes be a compatibility problem between the DIMMs and the MOBO but it could also quite easily be a tiny scratch on near the DIMM slot.

if your ram is generic then it is most likely the ram but if not then take it to your local hardware specialist to have it tested.

and yes you can have a stuffed DIMM slot straight from the shop but your warranty should cover it.

I would think so. You should first try flash to the latest BIOS (you should be able to the file you'll need, and instructions from the manufacturer's website), and if that doesn't fix the problem then I would contact the manufacturer of the motherboard. It may be under warranty.

Yes, you could have a bad slot but also are you making the right kind of bank with your ram?
