I have met people from many different countries, and I have traveled some. From my observances, I can tell you that mental illness is a VERY BIG TABOO in many of the other countries on the report. Many people would NEVER admit to it because it is considered a huge weakness. They just don't talk about it. If this was just personal surveys by non-psychiatrists, these numbers will not reflect reality. In the U.S. it is NOT as taboo to have mental illness, therefore, the much higher reported rate.

A) It's a large country, inhabited by many people and B) People are free to do what they want, so if a man walks around the street with no clothing on, he gets put in the mental hospital and the rate goes up a notch.
But really, on the more serious side, it may be because we live a fast-paced life. Everything in America is quick, quick, quick. The French call us the Impatient Americans, because we always want everything right away. Our society is based on a philosophy that everyone has the freedom to work as hard as they want in order to succeed. This can be very stressful, as it relates to the "every man for himself" tactic. There is also the whole "pop culture" deal, where peer pressure is on the move, and where a pair of jeans is "in" one day and "out" the next day. Because people are constantly trying to keep up with the latest fads, they may find they're having trouble focusing on everyday life without the Macy's center.

Because the far left Liberals have promoted this idea that you don't have to be responsible for yourself. We can give you a pill to make it all better and if not, then we will hold your hand for you and keep you warm etc. instead of facing the fact that life is hard and you have to work at it. Life is not fair, you don't deserve anything that you don't work for and that there is no free ride - yet the far liberal left has promoted just the opposite and proposed that the rest of us take care of them.

Probably because having a mental illness does not have the stigma attached to it, as it once did and people are more willing to seek treatment than they used to be. This results in higher reported cases.

We are the most medically advanced country in the world and are more capable and more apt to be able to diagnose someone with a mental illness. If Africa never tested anyone for aids would it be safe to assume they have the lowest aids rate in the world?

The reason is because like Canadians, they [Americans] are so self-absorbed !!! When any nation practices self-indulgence, mental illness results. Why else would we abort millions of babies and call Saddam a mass murderer for? THINK about it !!!
