Also, if you know, how much, on average, do they get paid? I want badly to get into musical theatre, but I'm not sure if my acting or singing is good enough to be on stage. I know, however, that I have talent playing the alto saxophone.

I agree that joining a musicians union or guild is the surest way to get into a pit orchestra, but I'd try asking someone who's actually in one. I'm not sure of pit orchestra salaries, but I know that in big symphonies like the Boston Symphony, salaries can reach up to $100,000!
