The expression 'red neck' comes from the 1800s in America and refers to anyone who works out of doors and whose neck turns red with the sun.
In modern English usage, 'red neck' usually means a person of working class or blue collar origin of the Southern States of the USA. The expression is not used much if at all here in UK, except in regard to a type of not very nice and possibly racist person of the South USA.
The very best ever portrayal of a 'red neck' is Rod Steiger in a movie called "In the Heat of the Night", also starring the aristocratic Sidney Poitier. Steiger plays a full on 'red neck' racist copper of the worst order. His performance is extraordinary.

"In modern usage, redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of whites from the Southern United States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context. See also Hillbilly"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redneck
Also - in the Boer war, British soldiers were referred to as 'red necks' because they burnt so red in the sun where there uniforms did not protect them. Today the term is used in a light hearted manner to describe an English person.

ok folks, let me tell ya, a red neck is a good ole boy that is born in the southern united states. They usually come from small remote areas where everyone knows everyone else, love to hunt, fish, drink moonshine and camp. They dislike outsiders and rules and regulations and taxes. Some folks call em hillbillys. You usually see a rebel flag hanging from their front porch or painted on their cars or Harleys.
