Imust say that this question is probably the HARDEST one I have pondered on answers in awhile... I too have seen both of these MEN pitch, although it was when they where each with different teams.... I saw the ROCKET in his early days with the Red Sox. I saw the BIG UNIT some years later with the D, BACKS.. what I do remember is how right away you knew with eack one of these LEGENDS how much more dominent they where than their oppenent. But as far as command of pitches and an ability to will things to go your way its the ROCKET hands down......

Roger Clemens, Unit wouldn't get the loss though. The Big Unit can throw major heat, and he s very intimidating, but he gives up runs, he's always got a great ERA or a not so great ERA. Clemens is just perfect, he can get K's, he gets the wins, and he's got a good ERA. I'd say though that Clemens might give up a run or two, so will Unit but a reliever would come in and lose the game, as Clemens can pitch a lot longer.

Clemens would be the likely winner. He has been a dominant pitcher his entire career, the most shocking part is even now he is as dominant at age 44 as Johnson was during his prime.

This statement will kill any argument Johnson has of topping Clemens:

There is more to pitching than strikeouts.

Also, Clemens has pitched in a superior league for most of his career.

Clemens. Johnson could (still can) throw very hard and mix a slider in every now and again. Clemens knows how to pitch. Clemens knows how to exploit a hitters weakness, can pitch for power, and can pitch for finesse. This is why Clemens ERA is still one of the best in the league and Johnsons is just average.

Well, it depends on who each player is pitching against (batters that is). If Johnson faces Clemens in his prime, he'd have to face some pretty crappy Red Sox batters as Clemens would have to face Johnson in his prime and would face guys like a young but good A-Rod, Griffey, Edgar Martinez....Tough call. I'd vote for Johnson.

I'd have to go with clemens. He's been a good strong pitcher every year of his career. He's one of the greats, arguably the best pitcher of all-time. I think at least 6 out of 10 times he'd win.

Career Stats

Clemens. ...W - 348 L - 178 ERA - 3.10...
Johnson. ...W - 280 L - 147 ERA - 3.22...

I suppose my age is showing here......when I read your question, my first thought was who was superior Clemens or WALTER Johnson....(lol)

In that scenario let there be NO mistake......The Big Train was more dominant than even The Rocket. I base that upon a column written by an amazing man (Shirley Povich), who watched both of them play during his 60+ years as a writer.

P.S. He also saw & compared The Babe & McGwire/Sosa....his verdict?? NO comparison!!

Clemens would have won. He could mix up his pitches much better than the Unit. The Unit had a better fast ball but that was it. Clemens threw a nasty curve and slider and could change it up as well.

johnson would bust clemens up. clemens is a choke artist and not a big game pitcher. johnson while not a huge big game pitcher is still alot better than clemens in big games.

I say Randy Johnson would, because Roger Clemens don't have the heat hardly anymore.
