You should be fine off with just formatting it. I doubt that anyone would bother spending hours just trying to recover some files that would be barely readable.

You might be able to remove it (depends on who manufactured it), but it's going to cost an arm and a leg to replace, and the buyer is gonna be a little PO'd if his "new" laptop shows up without a hard drive.
Follow the other recommendations on formating it. Yeah, for most users, the data is wiped. If someone has the tech skills to retrieve data off of a wiped hard drive, they probably don't have to go through ebay to steal personal information.

That's a really good question.
Yes, if you have personal or business stuff on it and don't know how to permenantly delete it from the hard drive. Software for the hard drive can be easily downloaded, from the manufacturer, that will insure the drive is wiped clean. If you know a little about computers, you could format the drive or fdisk it just to be sure.

You don't want to re-format - it's a hassle, but to be safer, I suggest that you procure a secure delete program. It's easy to use and less the hassles. One sample is Hard Disk Scrubber 2.0 from these sites.

Mmm...it's an iffy thing. I would probably say YES, remove it. I don't think it's the safest bet to leave it on there. BUT you need to alert the buyer ASAP or the laptop is worthless. So really, I guess...you need to leave it on there. :/
