To an extent, yes. The more you read, the better you become at literature interpretation and to an extent interpretation of reality. In addition, reading in general excercises many parts of the brain AND much like Movies or television many books contain various accurate knowledge. For the most part however, fiction is a form of entertainment.

depends on the books. I honestly believe reading anything is better than not. Some books can make you smarter due to the ideas that are put forward and the level of vocabulary they use.

It depends what your definition of 'smart' is. Reading fiction will definitely make you more knowledgable about worlds you can't or haven't experienced in reality, and broaden your mind to new ideas, concepts and experiences. It will also make you a better speller, and a better writer. Reading fiction is a wonderful form of escape with many fringe benefits - I highly recommend it!

Yes. It improves your vocabulary and writing skills, and most fiction tends to be based on some facts. There is a surprising amount of research that goes into historical fiction, crime dramas, etc.

In a few ways, it will. But if you really want to get smarter, read non-fiction.

of course. though they are fiction, they are invariably based on human life, and will have lessons regarding such. Also, they may contain a great deal of informative prose about any number of subjects. And one of the best rewards from reading any type of literature is learning new vocabulary.

Yes, I believe it will because you will aquire more vocabulary and writing skills as you encounter and internalize vivid language and patterns of sentence structure that will develop your facility to express and fluidly portray with words your life experience and feelings about the things that shape your world and have meaning to you.
