You can construct the boat however you'd like. Now, having it be seaworthy, that's a different story.

Yes.
Any object, no matter what shape, can be used as a "boat", as long as its weight is less than that of the water it displaces. I know of a company in California that makes sailboats out of concrete!
What you are talking about is similar to a barge used on rivers. I have even seen house boats made out of old barges.
Steering a flat bottom boat is very difficult. You should design it with some type of keel, centerboard or sideboards . Also a large flat bottom boat will need a lot of strengthening. Make sure that your design will be strong enough to hold its entire weight, spread out over the area of the flat bottom.
Pushing a cube through the water will take a LOT of power and fuel consumption if you want it to travel. You should cerate an angled bow to reduce drag.
To be more practical, go to a boatyard and look at some of the houseboats there. Also think VERY seriously about purchasing an old houseboat, gut it and rebuild it to your needs. Much safer to use a tried and true hull design and make it fit your needs. You will probably even save money.
Search the internet for as much information as you can from those of us that have done this before. Just as a sample (I am not endorsing this company) a quick Yahoo search netted this site http://www.kastenmarine.com/houseboat.htm.
Most important ... make sure that you check on US Coast Guard regulations for boat design! They will probably try to discourage your project, but it is part of their job to make sure that boats are safe.
Good luck!

you can make a boat of any shape the only thing is that the force of boynacy must be greater than the weight of anything you put on it or it will not float
the classic boat shape is because it provides a very large volume to applied the boyancy the greater the volume the greater this force becomes
take this example if you have a container of water get a plastic plate and place it on the surface you will find that it floats
now cut it into a square
it still floats
now add weight to the square
at a certain point the force of gravity down will overcome the boyancy force upward and it will sink

As long as it conforms to the law of buoyancy, (weighing less than the water it displaces) the shape matters not. There have even been boats constructed in rectangular forms from cement.

Got a calculator? 5 X 30 plus 12 X 12 = total square feet. 5 X 30 = 150 plus 12 X 12 = 144, so 150 + 144 =294. Your answer is 294 square feet. Do you see how I got that answer?

Yes, as long as you have a light material. Make sure the house is made of the same or another light material. Many such houses on boats are found in Lake Titicaca. They are made entirely of totora(a plant found near the lake) reeds.

Yeah dear... definately it can b constructed and you have already got an answer what they r called.
But the thing is that those boat find it difficulty to move as it cannot really cut the water pressure easily. hence they are consturcted in less number.

Yes, its called a raft. Houseboats are typically constructed on top of pontoons though.

ya.obviously one can construct rectangular one.but it is not used much because it will give a lot of room to friction and it will be a waste of fuel

no its not possible as it is difficult to construct a boat of rectangular shapes as it will have no balance when getting load...it will sink and it cant withstand in difficult conditions like rain etc. first of all it will be diificult to sail in water.it will not have balance to the waves...if we construct it can be constructed as house boat which can stand in a same position..
