science fiction books may do so, but most of the fiction books doesn't have that kind of effect... why don't you try to read nonefiction books which are more realistic and logical?

Reading of any kind helps build vocabulary and comprehension, which is necessary in order to learn any other subject, and the ability to learn will make you smarter. So yes, there is a connection between reading fiction and being smarter. But you can only go so far in the smarts department, you need common sense and street smarts too, and books are only a limited source of those. For example, you might be a nuclear physicist but if you can't interact with others or know that standing on the top of a ladder isn't a good idea, then you're not very life smart.

Definitely! I think that reading in general makes you smarter because you expand your vocabulary and all that good stuff. Especially with really well-written fiction novels, there are a TON of facts in any book. If you read the "classics" there's a lot of info about culture and language of the time.

I think that you definitely can get a little smarter by reading in general -- you definitely can't become stupid by doing so! ;-)

Reading of any kind improves your mind. You learn new words which give you a better vocabulary to express yourself, and be understood. You become exposed to new ideas and seeing the world through someone else's perceptions. Fiction will engage your imagination and think about things you might not, otherwise. Will it make you "smarter"? I don't know but Fiction, or Non-Fiction, is always a benefit for anyone with the knowledge to read.

Absolutely!
Reading, especially fiction, will at the very least improve your spelling, writing and reading skills, and enhance your communication skills. So at the very least your language will improve.
In addition, fiction takes a heluvva lot of research to write, (Trust me, I know!), because if you get something wrong in a novel, you get crucified, and therefore, historical fact and places on the planet (and other stuff like medical conditions, etc) need to be very accurately portrayed in fiction. So even while you are reading a “made up” story, the facts supporting the story is more often than not true, educational and entertaining.
Not to mention the imagination you’ll develop! Priceless.
Don’t let anyone ever tell you reading “fiction” is a waste of time – no reading is ever a waste of time, its much better than movies or your Xbox any day!
Happy reading!

Reading doesn't really make you smarter but more literate, in my opinion of course. Are you saying you do not read fiction?? Personally, I think fiction is most fun when it comes to books.

Will reading fiction make you smarter? Well, that would depend on your definition of "smart."

The careful reading and even studying of good, well-written literature, especially classic literature, will definitely expand your horizons, help you see past your own existence and gain fresh perspective on the world, and inspire you in ways that may be hard to imagine right now. A writing teacher of mine once said that we read in order to learn how to live our lives, whether we realize this or not, and I think that's true.

Reading makes you think, period. If that's how you define becoming smarter, then scoop up an armful of time-tested fiction and get to it!

It won't necessarily make you smarter, but as many people said here it will expand your comprehension and understanding of the world. It will also make you a better communicator, because you learn new words and expressions and see different writing styles. I learn lots of things from books, because they are often set in places I haven't been, dealing with cultures I have never interacted with, or dealing with situations I haven't had to deal with. You can learn a lot from fiction.

no, not really. you will just become a book worm. fiction cannot be studied by just reading the words printed on a page. the best way to understand it is to read it visually. and I am sure that nothing is better than watching fiction films. when i was in school i used to watch mostly TV and stood 1st in class. my experience says that in order to become smarter visual fiction is the best!!!

well i dont know if it'll make you smarter but it's sure fun. i read a lot of fiction and a lot of them have new truths inside. if you don't learn anything from reading then at least your imagination will have a blast. reading a really good book is great.
