Short answer: The Internet was originally created by DARPA (A United States defense research organization) in order to exchange data in an easier way.

Universities then adopted it so scientists could transfer data between each other.

When the Web was developed, the general public started taking an interest in the 'net, and that's how we are where we are today.

The original internet was developed by college students to communicate and connect their PCs together. Th military took it over quickly and when they finally released it to the world it was called arpanet. It then became the world wide web or internet.

Originally the physical network was constructed in 1969, linking four nodes:

University of California at Los Angeles,
SRI (in Stanford),
University of California at Santa Barbara,
and University of Utah.
