The Gibson Les Paul Custom has stood the test of time and are still widely used in the spectrum of electric guitar based music. The only other in comparison is the Fender Strat or Telecaster, both more than forty years old and still popular, but as far as a steady, quality instrument, you can't beat the Les Paul.

It depends on which sound you are going for...
but I LOOOVE my husbands semi hollow arch top above all the rest of his "toys".
Rich deep sound whether its plugged in or not.

gibson SG, or Ibanez(steve vai/joe satriani model) ibanez kind of pricey though.
