I were you, here is what I will do with senior workers: giving more attention to their complaints and performance. Business world is always evolving and senior workers are mostly the ones who are not able to keep up with the rapid change. Training and adequate solution to complaints usually can keep their performance and satisfaction on the job quite well and give them chances for opportunity expansion. You give young workers chance to enter the company, why don't you give senior workers the same chance?
If you have done all these and still get the same result, then you should go further by asking his coworkers or anyone in the same dept., what they think about his performance, what he said about the company or the job or you etc. Being in the company for 10 yrs he would know so much about it and if you are there less longer than he or even younger, you will be lacking this knowledge - means you lack the weapon. Evaluate your past decisions, maybe you have also made mistakes there.
After all this, you will basically have enough information of what happened and what should be done. Even if you have to fire him, you need this information to support your decision anyway!

I once worked with a senior worker that was rude and made us felt useless after doing the work he took all the award himself. If we did wrong, he threatened us that we would be fired etc. I left the company because I was young I had a choice, but other people who had no choice lost love to their work and excitement for change or even too lazy to attend company functions.
The HR called me a few months after quitting, they wanted to know why I left. I couldn't care less. For me, this shows lack of timing or planning ability. They focus on solving the problem but not avoiding it. Now I have my own business, I know what to do and how to do, learning from their mistakes. Good luck for you!
