A few of the people already answered this correctly so I will keep it brief and add one thing that others may not realize.
A passport is a issued by your country's government. A visa is permission from a country allowing you to come to there country for only X amount of days which this does vary depending on the country. There are tourist visas as well as work visas.
A passport says good for 10 years, however your passport needs to be valid 6 months after your return date back into your country. So think of it as your passport is good for 9 1/2 years. Many people do not know this and that is where a travel agent is a good resource to make sure everything is in order so you don't have problems on your holiday.

A passport is a travel document issued by a national government that usually identifies the bearer as a national of the issuing state and requests that the bearer be permitted to enter and pass through other countries.
Passports are connected with the right of legal protection abroad and the right to enter one's country of nationality. Passports usually contain the holder's photograph, signature, date of birth, nationality, and sometimes other means of individual identification. Many countries are in the process of developing biometric properties for their passports in order to further confirm that the person presenting the passport is the legitimate holder.
A visa is a document issued by a country giving a certain individual permission to formally request entrance to the country during a given period of time and for certain purposes. Most countries require possession of a valid visa as a condition of entry for foreigners, though there exist exemption schemes. Visas are typically stamped or attached into the recipient's passport, or are sometimes issued as separate pieces of paper.

A visa (short for the Latin carta visa, lit. "the document has been seen") is a document issued by a country giving a certain individual permission to enter the country for a given period of time and for certain purposes (but see below for caveats). Most countries require possession of a valid visa as a condition of entry for foreigners, though there exist exemption schemes (see passport for examples of such schemes). Visas are typically stamped or attached into the recipient's passport.

Passport is a document provided by a authorized department or ministry (in India it is Min of External Affairs) which deals with the relations with other country with details like name, photo identity, age, gender, place of domicile, present address and any records of person like education, physcal as well as criminal. The Union Govt of any country informs the world thro the document that the such a person is in our country want to travel out for certain reason.
Visa is a clearance given by the host country to any guest from other country for some reason which may vary from tour, work or business etc. Depends on the countries, their policies and relation between the host and guest country the validity of the visa differs. The validity depends on the type of entry too.
Interstingly Britain passport (Commonly called Red Passport) holder is allowed in any Comment Welth Countries without visa like India, Pakistan etc.
Indian Passport holder is allowed in Nepal without visa but not Pakistan, Srilanka.
It is exempted that during transit (changing flight / ship) in any country a guest can enter in to the transit country without visa but only to certain area like airport
Remember working with a tour visa in any country is an offence which may lead to serious problems
