(first of all, sorry, i am not a native speaker, so i am afraid i will have grammar errors)
As someone who has quited smoking successfully, I can tell you now, first of all, forget about gums and other prescriptions, they fail in most of the cases, i know the withdrawal is horrible, i used to smoke two packs (yes 40 cigarettes) a day, but it will last only a couple of days and after that you will start feeling wonderful, rediscovering how things really smell and how does food really taste. not to mention other advantages.
First of all, don't ask you why it is healthy to quit smoking, we all are aware of what tobacco can do, but start questioning yourself "why do I smoke?" write down your possible answers and Analyze them, you ll find soon that you smoke by plain stupidity.
Second, write down the time of day you feel the urge to smoke, and what were you doing, after some days, it will give you a clue on why you think you need it. perhaps it was boredom or stress. (and this also works for overweight and stress management)
Third, stop buying tobacco at all, you may want to ask any of your friends at first for a smoke, but in no time, you will feel embarrassed by keeping doing that and will quit asking for them too.
I know this is not a method that may work for everyone, but i was a chain smoker and it did wonderfully for me, I haven't had a smoke now for almost 3 years, I do still remember the first week, it was a hell, but if you keep on mind the part of "why do I smoke" you may go trough it, finding in no time the smell of tobacco disgusting.
Good luck, i do hope you can do it.

When I quit I had a HUGE problem with the psychological part. I found that constantly having a supply of Blowpops was an enormous help. It helped with the hand to mouth thing. And stick of the blowpop is white just like a cigarette. I would stay away from bars and drinking until you have at least a month under your belt of not smoking. When you take breaks, you will realize you really don't need a break. So, instead of smoking you will need to find something to fill break time. I also found that once it had been 2-3 weeks my sense of smell came back and once you smell cigarettes on other people you are blown over by how much it really stinks. That was a great deterrent for me as well. I just didn't want to smell that way. Good luck to you! The first 2 weeks are the roughest. Just take it one day at a time.

You just have to say I'm going to quit! And stick by it, the first few weeks will be very hard, the nicotine gum does work well, as said before sunflower seeds... I went through 2 bags a day when I quit....
Good Luck on quitting, when you do it, you will be much happier, and will have a lot more money.

What works well with one person may not work at all with another person and vice versa. The nicotine patch has worked very well for me. Also, i kept sunflower seeds and cinammon sticks around. The cinammon is good cuz it lasts a while and is shaped sort of like a cigarette - i even fake puffed on the cinammon sticks at times. There are also lots of support groups and programs available. Some county health centers, churches, and private organizations are willing to help as well.

Chew gum, stay away from the bars for at least 2 weeks and change your break habits.
It is very important that you plan these things and DO them. Read a book, do a puzzle, eat a piece of fruit, Best wishes, it's a VERY HARD habit to break but not impossible, you'll be glad you did when you see your teeth whiter, taste your food better, and your clothes smelling fresher. I've been there, I know.

If you find you are losing inspiration to give up, remind yourself of the lots of medical and financial benefits of stopping! As an example, did you know that 12 months after quitting, your risk of cardiovascular disease is decreased to nearly half that of a smoker's?
