Pet's, like people, need a warm loving home, where they will be taken care of, loved and protected from harm. Often pets are adopted and the people that adopt them don't understand the responsibility of taking care of a homeless pet.The pet is often returned to the animal shelter and the process to find him or her,
a warm and loving home must begin again. Some pets were abused and need a gentle caring home where no one will harm them.

(I volunteer at animal shelters)

In relation to the previous person's comments about one more animal kept alive... Consider the story (which you probably know about).

A man saw a child picking up and returning a starfish to the sea, after many of them are left on the beach to die. The man asked the child, "Does it matter? You can't save them all?!" The child repled, "To this one it matters." And picked up the starfish and returned it to the sea.

In addition, consider that adopting a pet may help YOU. Sure, the responsibilities are great, but animals give you their affection for so little in return. They will be there, even when the whole world is against you or has forgotten about you (why many old people keep dogs and cats). In short, they can be your friend. To be certain, they cannot discuss relativity with you, but neither can they betray your trust.

Simply put, the answer lies in the meaning of the words: "compassion and humanity."

Four weeks ago my wife and I saved a Rhodesian Ridgeback out of the SPCA from euthanasia. He is now our adopted child. He has issues, but they can, with work and love be overcome. Animals are color blind to a human's infirmities. They do not notice the Vets returning from Iraq with burned-off lips, eyebrows and ears. Nor, the Afgan returnee with nothin' below her left knee. In other words, their love to man begins pretty much unconditionally and carries on from there. If you don't adopt a pet for yourself, have you thought of donating it to any Veteran's Association such as the Military Order of the Purple Heart???

What a thoughtful question you have posed! I don't think one needs any more reasons for an animal adoption than that given above.

Happy New Year from Dooner George.

It will help the pet that you are adopting. More that likely the pet is at a kill shelter. When you buy from the pet store you know those puppies will live in through adulthood but that puppies that are at the pound are not promised their next breath.

I adopted Honey - domestic short hair form the Cat Protection Centre in Sydney.
Honey is 1 year old (?), had kitties, was abandoned by her family & was locked in a cage for 3 months.
We will provide shelter, love & care for her.

we adopted a little beagle pup. it took time with the training and endless arguements, but he grew up in a happy home. we have a 4 year old son that just loves him just as much as we do. a home isn't a home w/ out a pet, especially if you have kids!

It saves a perfectly healthy animal from getting euthanized. Over 6 million healthy animals are euthanized in the US each year due to lack of homes. Spay/neuter your animals and don't support breeders.

The most important thing is that it keeps that poor animal from being euthanized! And they make great companions.

It means one more animal will live instead of being executed just for being homeless.
