Okay this is more of an opinion, but there is some fact in this. I think Sony built in the Blue Ray player because: one it is a great market ploy to add this to a new game counsel and use it try and sell the product. "PLAY GREAT GAMES AND HAVE A SUPER CHEAP BLUE RAY PLAYER BUILT IN!" That is one reason I do believe. Another is most likely because Microsoft's Xbox 360 uses the HDDVD format, the competitor of the Blue Ray format. And one final reason, the PS2 was not a very good DVD player. So, I'm assuming the PS3 is not a very good Blue Ray player. That may not be true, since I do not own a PS3. One other note, when VCRs came out, they cost about 1000 bucks, and when DVD players came out, they also were about 1000 bucks. The Blue Ray player will come down in cost eventually. One other note too, is that if you want to play great games and watch movies, whether or not they are played at the highest level, the PS3 would be a good buy. Click the link below and read about the Samsung player. It has many features that make it more adequate for blueray.

Blu-Ray is a technology developed by Sony. It costs more for another company, such as Samsung, to buy the rights to use that technology.
But Blu-Ray right now is not widely used. They are having trouble replacing High-Definition DVDs.

Because it's just stupid and you are just paying for Blu-Ray player in the PS3,if the PS3 wouldn't have the Blu-Ray player it would be way cheaper.

Because more people are going to buy PS3s, so they're cheaper.

b/c it's brand new out and no one else has it. As soon as another company develop there own, or it's been about a year, the prices will drop drastically.
