Athlon, Sempron and Duron are AMD processors based on the Intel architecture, while Pentium, Celeron and Core Duo are Intel's.

Basically this may explain your question.

Athlon and Athlon 64 is AMD's answer to Intel's Pentium and used for High-end systems

Duron (obsolete) and Sempron are rivals to the Celeron and intended for lower-end systems.

Centrino, Pentium M(obile) are Intel processors for Notebooks.

I may not give you the detailed explanation as it could blow your mind, But I do suggest you visit the wikipedia site for more reading.

Athlon processors are made by AMD - for instance the Athlon 64-they have been around quite a while and are cheap and reliable.

Pentiums are made by Intel - for instance Pentium 4 3.0 Mhz. Fast and reliable - more expensive than the Athlons.

Semphrons - are another AMD product - comparable to the Intel Centron - dependable but slow - cheap in price.

Corduo - by Intel - dual processors in one unit. Very quick - expensive
