Oddly, they CAN.
I remember reading about a brewery employee who was fired for drinking a competitor's beer in a public bar -- on his own time.
He sued and got nowhere, because except for race, religion, age, gender, and disability, employers can pretty much fire anyone they want for any reason. There's no law against it.
People have been fired for using competitor's products, having a bumper sticker for the "wrong" political candidate -- a company can even institute a no smoking policy and fire you for smoking in your own home. All of these things have happened, and they're all legal.
